The body of 65 year old, Sheila Abdus-Salaam, the first Muslim woman in U.S. history to serve on the bench, was found yesterday in the Hudson River. Police investigating what happened to the associate judge, who is also the first African American ever to serve on New York’s state Court of Appeals, believe it to be suicide. It is reported that Abdus-Salaam had an ongoing battle with depression. Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed her in 2013.
